What can you do? You can write to your local MP and raise the points mentioned above with them and ask them where they stand? Do they stand against racist/fascist ideologies or do they support it? Does your MP belong to one of the Friends of Israel pressure groups? In the light of this revelation, would they consider changing their position and if not what does that say about them? If you don’t know who your local MP is, you can find out by visiting http://www.theyworkforyou.com/ To help you contact your MP you may wish to use the template shown below ===================================================== [Your Name] [Your MP’s name] [Your Address] [Your MP’s address] Date Dear [Insert your MP’s name] I would like to raise a matter which is deeply concerning to me and I am very keen to hear your views on this topic. You may be aware that in October 2006 the Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert appointed Avigdor Lieberman as his deputy. This is a disturbing development because Mr Lieberman is a man who is known in Israel for his racist views towards Palestinians and Israeli Arabs and these views have been well documented by leading Israeli newspapers. As Britain has an influential role to play in the Middle East I feel it is the duty of our Government to ensure that the Middle East of tomorrow is one of peace, justice and equality. Here are a few examples of the types of comments that Mr Lieberman has made · In 2003 he advocated the drowning of Palestinian prisoners in the Dead Sea and offered to provide buses to take them there. When Jamal Zahalka, an Arab Member of the Knesset, criticised him for making this comment Mr Lieberman threatened his fellow Member of the Knesset by saying, "Let me tell you openly. As far as I'm concerned you're much worse than Arafat and Abu Mazen. If it was up to me you'd be sitting in jail, at best." (Haaretz 08/07/2003, http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/pages/ShArt.jhtml?itemNo=315541) · In May 2004, he said that 90 percent of Israel's 1.2 million Arabs would "have to find a new Arab entity" in which to live beyond Israel's borders. "They have no place here. They can take their bundles and get lost,". (Institue for Middle East Understanding 12/11/06 http://imeu.net/news/article003471.shtml) · He is a staunch opponent of the peace process he resigned his post and left the Likud party in protest over then-Prime Minister Netanyahu's signing of the U.S.-brokered Wye River Memorandum. (Institue for Middle East Understanding 12/11/06 http://imeu.net/news/article003471.shtml) · The Jerusalem Post reported that Lieberman called for the execution of any Arab Members of Knesset who meet with representatives of the Palestinian government, saying, "World War II ended with the Nurenberg trials. The heads of the Nazi regime, along with their collaborators, were executed. I hope this will be the fate of the collaborators in [the Knesset]." (Jerusalem Post 04/05/06 http://www.jpost.com/servlet/Satellite?pagename=JPost%2FJPArticle%2FShowFull&cid=1145961280390) · Labour minister Ophir Pines-Paz resigned over Lieberman's appointment saying that Lieberman was tainted "by racist declarations and declarations that harm the democratic character of Israel" (The Independent 31/10/06 http://news.independent.co.uk/world/middle_east/article1943313.ece) I would like to know if you would support taking a stand against the Israeli Government who has exposed its explicit support for racist policies? Would you not consider it your moral duty to raise this very important issue with your party leadership? One can not live in a Western Democratic society and at the same time support a racist and oppressive Government. It is hoped that you will be able to draw parallels between Mr Lieberman and various other unsavoury individuals such as leaders of right wing extremist parties or other political racist ideologies such as apartheid. I would be grateful if you could raise these points in the House at the next relevant opportunity. Bearing this in mind and the previous arguments & evidences given I would like a response to your position, thoughts and what action you will take on the following points 1. Support of the Deputy Prime Minister of Israel Avigdor Lieberman 2. Support of the overwhelming majority of the Israeli Cabinet Ministers that endorsed the appointment, and implicitly the views, of Avigdor Lieberman 3. The Prime Minister of Israel Ehud Olmert and his support for Avigdor Lieberman knowing full well Mr Lieberman’s views towards the peace process 4. Finally your justification for the Government of Israel taking the above mentioned points into account I look forward to your response and hope you will take a stand against all forms of racism. Yours Sincerely [Your Name]
