Firecrackers were thrown inside the Basilica of Annunciation in Nazareth on Friday afternoon wounding several congregators, witnesses said.
According to witnesses two young Jewish women and a man entered the basilica compound dressed up as pilgrims.
They hid firecrackers and small gas baloons in a pram and detonated the firecrackers inside the church during a special prayer for the opening of Lent.
Large police forces arrived at the scene and attempted to push away pilgrims at the compound and prevent them from entering the basilica in an attempt to hurt the suspects.
The three were caught and held inside the basilica compound, and police were holed up in the church protecting the suspects from the mob.
The Basilica is built at the site of the Annunciation, where according to Christian faith the Virgin Mary was told by archangle Gabriel she he been chosen by God to bear His son, Jesus.
