i'll answer my own question:

both westernisation and traditionalism are two sides of the same cultural coin.

a modernist will try to extract the true religion from centuries of cultural accretions whilst at the same time guarding himself against present-day atheistic trends within self-declared progressive societies.

sound like a difficult/impossible task? yep, much easier to wear some middle-eastern clothing and stick with the status quo.
