Default UK troops could be in Afghanistan for 15 years, says Hamid Karzai

Afghanistan's president says leaders expect to emerge from today's London conference with a 'clear agenda' for the next five years

British troops could remain in Afghanistan for another 15 years, the country's president Hamid Karzai said today.

In a BBC interview before the start of the London conference on the future of Afghanistan, Karzai said that although Afghan police and soldiers could be trained and equipped within five to 10 years, "sustaining" them would take longer.

Gordon Brown said that the number of troops and police officers would rise to 300,000 by 2011, and the number of British troops in the country could be gradually reduced.

But Karzai said: "With regard to training and equipping the Afghan security forces, five to 10 years would be sufficient. With regard to sustaining them … the time period extends to 10 to 15 years."

Brown and Karzai were speaking in a joint interview with the BBC Radio 4's Today programme, broadcast before they both made opening speeches at the start of the conference in Lancaster House, London, this morning.

Brown would not be drawn on a timetable, and said instead that British withdrawal depended on conditions in the country.

I'm concerned by the implication of another 15 years of direct military involvement in this country.

I personally believe that even one more year is too much as I can't envisage there ever being a peaceful outcome for Afghanistan.
    Just monkeying around.

Any 'president' who has no issues with occupiers being there for another 5, 10 or 15 years clearly doesnt care about the country.

The British General who estimated around 40 years will be scartching his head at Karzais 15 year term.

Karzai may have worked out how much he can steal from the nation to make him enough money before he goes in Exile.

Coalition forces will be there for a while but it will depend on what kind of role they are doing. As well as foot patrol work and missions, chunk of their time in Afghanistan will be training the various forces so IMO, if they crack on with that and get the forces to an adequate standard then the troops, drip-by-drip, can leave.

Peoples religion shouldn't leave because of money, the prospect of death or because other people want it to. For some the dunya costs them the hereafter.

i was watching JFK the movie with kevin costner a while back, and when his character was summing up in the court room he mentioned the private equity companies that rule the world, and this was back in the 60`s

these companies bankroll politicians, they are the faceless ones who rule the world it all goes back to them, When you control the media outlets worldwide its not hard to make the common man rage in fury and tell them its the Muslims that are the source of all evil.. I have seen many non Muslims fall in the same trap and there jingoism is there biggest hurdle.. At the end we "males" are all alpha males and are territorial. Unfortunately world politics will not change in our lifetimes and prepare yourself to see more propaganda and half truths from media outlets,

    funny thing thoough.....

they all ready knew they couldn't win in Afghanistan winning the war was the last thing on there minds

    think about it comrade......

why have they not sent 95% of there forces to Afghanistan ( usa&UK)from day one ?

why send a few thousand every now and again !? because they wish to prolong the war and not finish it in a weekend... The Taliban dont have that many fighters compared to the soldiers of USA and UK, so why cant they finish them OFF, why aren't they sending all there soldiers to Afghanistan???

WAR is a billboard for private equity companies to advertise there weapons worldwide, Other countries who have seen what devastation these weapons can cause, want them and they will pay big bucks for them, quite simple really.........

Was just watching a program on how the Royal Navy was initially formed and funded.

Basically the Bank of England was formed by private investors who lent the government of the time the money required to fund the navy.

The navy in turn expanded which meant that suppliers of coal, wood and iron made lots of money from the production and maintenance of all those ships.

Also, the navy meant that merchant ships were protected leading to increased trade.

Throw in a few deliberate wars with France and Spain.

And of course those original investors did very well out of their loans

    Rule Britannia and all that...

Not much change in 300 years.
