Default London Demonstration 10 January 2009

I don't know if anyone went to the demonstration in London yesterday?

It was bitterly cold and the overcast sky was foreboding. Fairly early on in the demo, I noticed a bunch of riot police running towards the front of the demonstration. Soon afterwards we heard a sequence heard thud like explosions. There was tension in the air, and it was obvious that something big was going to happen.

And it did. Later on (around 5pmish) things turned violent. It started off when a bunch of protesters started hurling shoes at police officers. This quickly lead to a proper showdown with the hardcore riot police (with helmets, shields, battons, taser guns, masks, etc). The riot police were at once stage totally cornered. I was stood there watching with utter disbelief.

I then saw this totally out of control person picking up a metal barricade (I kid you not) and beginning to throw it at shop windows. He was right there in front of me so I had to intervene - "I'm sorry brother, I can't let you do this... what you're doing isn't Islam" and pulled the barricade away from him. He then told me in no uncertain terms "I will hurt you if you don't let go". I explained that "there are small children here, and when the police respond these children will be hurt, do you really want that?" He wasn't listening. I was concerned about my own safety so I was about to let go when another guy intervened to help me... finally there was a critical mass growing against this extremist.

And as I predicted, the police did respond. We heard thud like explosions again.. people started running away from the police screaming. The police chased after the protestors hitting them with their battons. I got crushed by the people running away and can only imagine what happened to the children who were also close by.

This photo shows the riot police a little while after the confrontation.

    This photo shows the aftermath:

The day before, I heard this ridiculous, unashamedly pro-Israeli radio presenter (James something or the other on LBC) predicting that something this would happen. Our movement which is based on solidarity with the people of Gaza was hijacked by senseless extremists yesterday, who just handed fodder to smug apologists for war crimes. I can't express my anger and dissapointment at this.

^Yeah I was there, was the guy you were talking about by any chance a tall, wide guy wearing a balaclava and a black and white palestinian scarf tied around his head?

I saw a group of guys going through the crowd silently, with balaclavas on. People just moved aside, and looked a bit scared so it was quite obvious there was going to be trouble.
At one point the PSC guy told us to get out for our own safety but we decided to stay, nothing happened because we weren't near the trouble.
The news only reported the "trouble" and underestimated the numbers that turned up. If there had been no trouble, what would the footage have been like?

At one point it did get pretty dangerous, people suddenly got pushed back with a lot of force and some almost went flying, there were still metal barriers on one side so people were getting crushed, I heard someone screaming that she couldn't breathe. People who fought back were beaten by the police and some came out covered in blood...

I wish I had taken photo's. Alhamdulillah we had around 6/7 thousand turn up here in Blackburn and it went without trouble. I had volunteered for steward duties and at one point we were told BNP were on thier way to where the march was going to end, thankfully they were all arrested before then.

Were they going to ask the white people to leave before they started doing whatever they had planned? They must be feeling quite left out of the situation in Gaza, as it involves all races.

Was that question to me? if so no it was for all, regardless of religious beliefs etc.....organised by Muslims though.

Tony Blairs sister in law was funny, at one point she rang his office in the Middle East somewhere, an assistant of his picked up and she said we have a message for him and everyone just yelled lol!

No I was talking about the BNP, if they were coming to counter your protest. It doesn't fit with their agenda, because all races are involved.

I've heard her on the radio before, good idea of hers!

Does anybody have an idea of what requirements those megaphones need to have? I would like to get one off ebay...

Yes these guys have been around all week in small numbers but I saw more of them on the March.

I have to admit I stood to one side for one too.

From my understanding they tried to get within the crowd and whip up trouble but alhamdullilah they were quicky and efficiently dealt with by the police.

Can't help yo with the megaphone sorry.

At the embassy protests they took photos of nearly everyone from about 4 foot away. The photographer has a hat with Police Photographer written on it.
