Default Saudi man kills daughter "for converting to Christianity"

Saudi man kills daughter for converting to Christianity
    By Mariam Al Hakeem, Correspondent
    Published: August 12, 2008, 18:34

Riyadh: A Saudi man working with the Commission for Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice recently killed his daughter for converting to Christianity.

According to sources close to the victim, the religious police member had cut the tongue of the girl and burned her to death following a heated debate on religion.

The death of the girl sent shockwaves and websites where the victim used to write with various nick names have allocated special space to mourn her, while some others closed temporarily in protest.

According to the Saudi Al Ukhdoud news website, the victim wrote an article on the blog of which she was a member under the nickname “Rania” a few days before her murder.

She wrote that her life became an ordeal after her family members grew suspicious about her after a religious discussion with them.

She said that her brother found some Christian articles written by her as well as a cross sign on her computer screen. Since then he started to insult her and blamed the internet for pushing her to change her religion.

The “Free Copts” website published a message which it received from a friend of the victim, revealing that the killer is in police custody and that he is being investigated for an honour related crime.

Saudi religious scholars have frequently warned against the dangers of Christian internet websites and satellite TV channels which attract Muslim youngsters to change their religion.

They decreed that watching these channels or browsing these websites which call for conversion to Christianity by various means is against the teachings of Islam.

There is no evidence for this story aside from the alleged comments on the Free Copt site (I cannot find them at all), given its propensity for lies and distortions toward Islam I'd like to wait and see if this is actually true.

Can I ask how you will be able to do this. I have no idea how free the media is in Saudi. Will they be free to print such a story uncensored or be able to report it on TV.

Gulf News - a very reliable and respected newspaper carried the story first and it's been reprinted on sites around the world. It's written by one of their own regular correspondents - Mariam Al Hakeem, so there seems little reason to question its authenticity without serious proof to the contrary.

You could be right. I honestly don't know. I have tried Googling, but I get the same news report and websites.

    I took it from a Saudi-based blogger.

Does anyone else have any additional information?

the problem with bloggers is that you don't know who they are, but some people have an agenda and the copts are definately one of them.

    This one is not anonymous.

Everyone has an agenda. You do, I do, everyone.

    Otherwise, we would be dead.

Gulf News is not a blog. It's a leading Middle Eastern newspaper woth an excellent reputation. Clearly bloggers had to have picked it off that newspaper.

It's not, you're right. However there is no mention on the Free Copts site. Arab News would report this, especially as they are very opposed to the mutawa. The onus is on those who made the allegation to prove it, I haven't seen anything yet.

I agree with you, but he should serve a sentence for murder first.

I cannot understand how anyone can kill, let alone kill their own child.

    Very true!

May I add that amongst some Muslims over the years there's been an ingrained unwritten rule about being allowed to kill apostates for "foresaking their religion".

The best analogy I can use to explain this is a film "A Few Good Men" (1992) starring Tom Cruise and Jack Nicholson. In the film it is alleged that officers in the US Marines ordered the killing of an underperforming recruit by an unwritten rule known as a "Code Red". In the US Marine's own training manual and rulebook, no such rule existed.

I am saying that although Qur'an and Sunnah may not advocate the killing of an apostate, some Muslims WRONGLY believe that they are allowed to do it anyway.

Islamic law does not punish an individual for chosing a different religion...

.....This is a very sad and telling of how the country that ought to be the lead in how Islam ought to be practiced....but we have quited the opposite here....Commission for Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice....its not Islam thats being promoted thats for sure - I wonder whether this guy will be punished...

Instead of killing her couldn't they have prayed for her to come back to Islam. How is burning her Islamic and cutting out her tongue is pure evil. It's sick.

No. She converted to christianity. When she applied to have her religion changed from being a muslim to a christian on her identity card, it was rejected. She then applied to the highest court of the land, it too was rejected.

She is a victim of sharia man made laws which supposedly enacts on behalf of its religion and sadly gets it all horribly wrong. Even in a progressive 1st world country!!!
