This is actually possible- i know of someone who had an interview for medicine and he didnt want to shake hands with any female interviewers. He rang in and asked them whether there were females on the panel and also that as a muslim he will not be shaking her hand- therefore can this be told to the appropriate people so that they do not get offended.
I never did find out the whole story though cos i think unfortunately he did shake a ladies hand (one was a muslim sister which made him feel even worse)- lol :-/
But i think there are ways around it.

I would like to see the fatwas , it would make my life easier.
Imam Hanifa and Ahmed, based there ruling on shaking hands with old woman - according to a hadith, were prophet (saw) did and when Abu Bakr (ra) did when he was the caliphate.

In a purely professional sense ?

As you know, when you're in a non-Muslim country, the rules change.
You are quite right - for every ruling in shariah, there is wisdom behind, even if ppl don't know, there is a purpose behind it, same with the shaking of hands - the wisdom behind this, that it create a barrier, so not to spread fitnah.

Fiqh is a deep subject and subhanallah is really well developed, when scholars look at a situation, like this they look number of principles of fiqh, and this situation there are two that need to be looked at - Necessity and custom.. As in fiqh there are qawaid's (priniciples) like - Necessity makes the unlawful lawful” (Ad-daruratu tubiyh al-mahzurah) and “Necessity is measured in accordance with its true proportions” (Ad-daruratu tuqdaru bi-qadriha). and Custom is the basis of judgement” (Al-‘addatu muhakkamatun) - hence why I said earlier when it becomes necessay, it would probably be acceptable - it is not about compromise - it is about looking at the fiqhi and usuli prinicples.....

    Here is a fatwa:

Illuminate, thank you for that link.

    I'll post an excerpt :

"There are two common hadiths concerning shaking hands with the opposite sex.

In the first hadith, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is reported to have said, "I do not shake hands with women" (Al-Bukhari).

The second hadith is narrated on the authority of Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him), he said :

"The female slave from Madinah would take hold of the hand of Allah's Messenger and lead him wherever she wished, without withdrawing her hands from his hands until the Prophet fulfils her need" (Ahmad).

Based on the two hadiths, we conclude that the basic rule discourages shaking hands with members of the opposite sex, but if one were put in an awkward situation, then there would be no harm to shake hands with members of the opposite sex.

This ruling applies to Muslims living in the West because of the social customs prevailing in these countries.

Now that's what one calls common sense (and within Islamic Law too)

Isn't this a case of "when in Rome, do as the romans do?"

Shaking hands is a basic gesture of friendship. A display to others that you hold no weapons.

I understand that Muslims have some issues with hygene, after all, who would shake hands with a minger? But it's the polite thing to do. I think Allah would forgive a gesture of politeness and friendship.

Nah, that doesn't really apply at all. Because in some countries the men and women like to kiss as a sign of friendship.... so... you get the picture

Not in this country though. You might find that in the French but they are barbaric savages who havent evolved since the 7th century.

A handshake is just a gesture of friendship. Tolerate it the first time but then explain.

Hmmm... the french may say a kiss is a gesture of friendship and a handshake is too prudish.... <sigh> Where do you draw the line heh?

Even if that was true, as the Romans didn't shake hands in greeting, maybe it's no defence to avoid doing so today?

It all depends on how badly you want to bridge the gulf of cultures. I'm not advocating suddenly snogging a stranger in France. Even I wouldn't go that far. You have to crack a little bit though because its a trust issue. Try and understand it from the majority perspective who knows little if anything about Islam.

I'd really like to explore this point further but I expect it would be considered 'off topic'.

Has the politeness of not using capitals exclusively passed you by?

Promiscuous societies are diseased but no-one ever caught HIV or syphilis from shaking hands. That I know of anyways.

What are you saying about divorcees by the way. I don't follow.

He's arguing that encouraging people to shake hands leads to the breakdown of morality in a society. Comon sense really.

islam prevents ..point A....the absolute possibility..........the smile ...to a ghair mahram or a handshake which could illicit a "zing"..
    er....to put it politely chemistry

    Do you honestly believe that?

Do you have so little self-control?

Is there something wrong with me because I'm not overcome with lust whenever I see an attractive woman or shake hands with someone of the opposite sex?

Traveller, it's the principle behind the reason (although it is allowed by some Scholars, impermissible from others - the reasons 'for' the ruling is that the environment should be work-related and completely professional).

Are you serious? Have you ever heard of the slippery slope fallacy?

Maybe I should just stay indoors from now on. I mean think of all the risks I put myself through when I venture out of the front door.
