Dear Sir or Madam
I am writing to demand that your station does not broadcast a British National Party (BNP) party political broadcast in this general election.

BNP leader Nick Griffin is facing four criminal counts of inciting racial hatred in a case that will not be concluded until after the election. It would be wrong of broadcasters to lend legitimacy to a political party whose leader will answer to such serious charges.

The BNP is so associated with Griffin in the public’s mind that to screen a BNP party political broadcast (PPB) would clearly constitute an insult to the judicial process and compound the possible offences committed by awarding that party further opportunity to spread racial hatred.

Given the BNP’s record it would be highly inappropriate to screen any BNP film which could be seen to try and influence the outcome of a trial or make political capital out of the charges for his own electoral gain.

I believe the BNP should not be allowed access to PPB’s until the current criminal charges are concluded.

In addition, the BNP cannot be trusted not to spread racial hatred in their PPB’s. Last May Channel 5 initially axed a BNP broadcast after the BNP attempted to exploit a Channel 4 documentary and portray Muslim men in Bradford as paedophiles sexually exploiting under-age white girls.

C5’s decision followed comments by Chief Constable of West Yorkshire Colin Cramphorn who forced C4 to postpone their documentary after he warned it could have provoked “a risk to community safety.”

In the same week the BBC screened a BNP PPB which featured Griffin warning of a “race war” sparked by rising immigration. I believe such comments, referring to possible bloodshed and racial violence against Black and Minority Ethnic people, amounts to incitement to racial hatred.

The BNP have a track record of using PPB’s to spread racial hatred and I have no confidence that the situation will be any better during the present general election. The current criminal charges faced by Griffin and two other far-right activists associated with the BNP add to the argument that broadcasters should not screen BNP PPB’s.
