Local elections are happening in many parts of England on 4 May 2006 .

If you live in an area where an election is taking place, this is your one chance to be heard about the issues that affect your everyday life. Your vote can make a real difference. But, in order to vote, you need to be registered. If you don't register, you could lose your vote.

Make sure you are registered to vote by 13 March to have your say.

You should get a polling card soon. As a Council worker I'm paid to deliver them. I just sent out a load of confirmation letters, but I don't know if every borough does this.

Otherwise ring the electoral registration office in the Council where you live.

PS Voting in local elections isn't haram by anyone's definition since no legislation takes place at that level of government. It's an easy way to punish the govenment for it's policies and, given the size of wards, get politicians to reflect Muslim concerns. So there's no excuse for anyone to avoid voting this time.

I recieved all the voting forms by post this morning, we'v got about seven I think, even though theres only 5 of us living here......

Just phone your councils and they will send out everything you need to vote.

And remember, kick out the Labour Party wherever they are.

Its time to make things abit more interesting in British Politics!!

"Voting in local elections isn't haram by anyone's definition"

Out of curiosity what do you mean by haram?

Local elections are actually more of an exercise in democracy than any general election in this country, considering we still use the highly un-representive plurality system to elect government parties. The local elections decide who your closest point of contact (your local government council) are going to be.

Voter apathy is likely to be high, I wouldn't expect anyone under the age of 25 to vote, out of sheer disinterest. I also know a lot of people who live at rock bottom around me don't want to register to vote because so much of their daily lives could not be deemed 'legitimate'. Most of the voters will be OAPs, then the people who's lives get most affected by the government i.e. the people who have to pay the most tax, pay for the most licences/permits etc For the rest I don't think anyone really has the time or really gives a ****. Political participation in Britain has never been more stagnant, mainly due to my generation's near alienation from politicians.

Its an open door for a minority vote to have an effect (remember the BNP candidates being voted in a few years ago?), but you would be slightly on the wrong track to think it would serve anything that could be regarded as "punishing" westminster politicians. On the contrary I think they would be pleased to see the democratic franchise being endorsed, they might even go so far as to claim it was evidence of working intergration. Why say 'punishing' anyway? If there were to be anything of the sort, surely it should be going to the mere 30% of the population responsible for voting Tony Blair in again for starters!?

Unfortunately brothe you cannot ask everyone this question. due to the fatc of age restrictions. i will have to wait another two more years before i can vote. but getting people to register is importnat because it allows people to have a chance of chosin their representative for their area. not just some communist demmocrat ((i.e. former conservative leader)p.s. i cant remeber his name.)
