How many muslim characters are in the soaps...
here is my lowdown since when i can remember... please add you two pence worth so i can have a nostaligic chuckle........
Eastenders - http://www.bbc.co.uk/f/t.gifAli Osman
Happy-go-lucky Turkish Cypriot Ali ran the cafe with his wife Sue.
Had a taxi firm, liked to gamble and sleep with prostiutes
Eastenders - http://www.bbc.co.uk/f/t.gifTariq
llegititmate child, long lost half brother of his ex-girlfriend, ran away from his best mate when he got stabbed. Like drugs, clubbing and women.
Coronation street - Samir Rachid
Fell in love with Deidre when she was on holiday in morrocco or was it turkey they got married.. he died..but we was the love of her life and she is still called Deidre Rachid
------------------------------------------------------------
And thats it!!! Just the 3 in over 30 years of soaps that all i can think of or find!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Disgraceful

to be honest sunilight. thats a good thing.
the fewer muslims in soaps the better. they will no doubt portray them in a negative light. no one wants to watch a soap about a good muslim family - its boring. nice people dont make good tv. they'll probably "sex them up" or make them bad people; probably terrorists.
look at "east is east" its so infuriateing!

Look at Eastenders.... there are NO BENGALIS!!! What's that about? The East End is teeming with us!
As for Corrie... if it was realistic, all of the Northern monkeys will be hounding out thier Asian neighbours cos they're all BNP! ;) :D

i think all soaps are a waste of time. The biggest nutters are the ones who watch Corri st and East Enders.
Saying that, if any Muslim had a good role, then that would indeed reflect a better image for Muslims. I am not sure and please correct me, i have been told that there is a Pakistani Women as a Police officer?
Islamic Hope i do not know where you get the impression of BNP, there is not single councillor who is BNP in Manchester, even in the Oldham pit, which is on the out skirts of Manchester, does not have any.
Ironically, Manchester Muslims fared far better than all the Muslim communities from 9-11 onwards. , Ironically in Manchester it is far easier to get elected as a councillor, if you are a none English speaking, asylum seeking from Pakistan than being a member of the BNP. Fact
I find your comments of classifying people who did the out most to prevent BNP getting hold in Oldham. .They happen to be Labour and were mainly Anglo Saxons, who in stead of leafleting in there wards, Manchester preferred to leaflet against BNP in Oldahm.
I am Conservative, saying that i have will have nothing but praise a number of Labour Councillors for there actions in Manchester and in Oldham against BNP. What I find disgusting is you comment. Irony is you talk same language as BNP.
It was these Mancunians which tactically voted so that BNP, where they put a candidate, so that BNP would not get a hold of a seat in Manchester. Saying that it was Labour Councillors and Mancunians who did what they could, and they were all against War on Iraq. Number of them lost there seats last time round. The irony is number of these people are not there to fight BNP any more, the Muslims that were elected have not even attend one anti BNP function, naturally your mentality is like that of BNP, they use the terms like monkeys, I find your statement disgusting. But saying that Pakistani preferred to elect none English speaking asylum seeker, who recently went back to Pakistan for the weddings of his son, irony he was only seeking asylum in the UK, because he feared that he killed if he returned back to Pakistan. The irony is the very racist term you have used, BNP use to define this none speaking Pakistani, asylum seeker.

Fao: Brash - The little wink by the side of my statement about the BNP was a little joke. I've met with several of the Labour Councillors and the Mayor of Oldham and I think the work they did was sterling. Nonetheless, the BNP got close to a million votes at the Euro elections... most coming from 'Up North'. I was making a sweeping generalisation for comedic effect, OK?
When I lived in Barcelona, I used to catch up on Easteneders via the internet. How sad is that!!?? :o
Over in the UK, Soaps tend to deal with 'issues' the way American Sitcoms do. The Cosby Show (remember?), Fresh Prince, and even the likes fo Friends and Mork and Mindy have dealt with 'issues' such as truancy, racism etc.
Over here, we use soaps. I think it is vital that we get decent Muslim characters on soaps to demonstrate that we are upstanding members of the community.

Exactly..........
And also to raise issues such as racism, religion, and the fact that we are normal ppl living lives in the uk facing same issues as anyone else in uk...
And that we arent some sort of isolated, seperatist freak community...

Sunlight - It could also deal with issues WITHIN that community. e.g. the drug problem amongst Bengali in the East End. After episodes that deal with 'issues' they always have a phoneline... they coudl show that and stuff.
Man, the BBC Chief Comminssioning Editor NEEDS ME!!! :D

i agree,
sometimes it feels like we are invisible....
Like we live on the fringe of UK life, instead of right in hte middle of it, which is where most of us are
half the problem when i converted is that many people have never even heard of converting to islam...
sometimes i think it would have been easier to say to ppl, i am a crackhead or a lesbien, cus everyone has seen that on tv, they understand the issues surrounding it, but conversion was alien to nearly everyone i knew...
i think sonia in stenders should convert and become a muslim....
then the world will understand me!!!

well if they ever had a muslim character it wouldnt be someone converting to islam it would probably be something quiet the opposite; maybe a big bearded brother becoming a terrorist or a sister becoming 'liberated' and taking off the hijab.
no doubt the ratings will boost - but all for the wrong reasons!

when i was growing up
grange hill had a muslim family....
whilst zammo was doing smack
she was getting shipped off to pakistan to marry her cousin...
does anyone remember her...
i think her character was called Ayesha
No doubt ti gave a bad image of islam..
but was it a fare one?
I would say YES
as i am sure it was an issue many pakistani girls had to face back in 1980's
and probably still today...
its just a shame they didnt do the helplines back then

i've decided to start my own soap opera. based around a muslim community - it will be called brothers, sister and Abu Farooq.
i'll be the oh-so kind shop keeper Abu Farooq who hands out free sweets to his neighbours (well, only the ones he likes). i'm the main character.
sunilight, you can be my cheerful neighbour who's always coming in and out of my shop. you pretend to like me, but you only come in to get my sweeties! secretly your opening a sweet shop across the street.
anyone want these roles??
Malik the 'not-so-butch' butcher.
Mr.Cohen - the only jew in the village. he's welsh.
Unaiza - the local cook ;)

I appreciate your comments.
A 100,000 voted for the BNP does not mean that there are 100,000 racist. A large chunk are dissatisfied with Lib Dem, Conservative and particularly Labour.
When there is a dissatisfaction with in Labour, that is when BNP increases its vote. It mainly appeals to the working class, which happens to vote mainly Labour, working class blame the foreigners, that is how they have been educated by the BNP. They are taking the jobs, they are taking housing benefits, if we did not have these foreigners, we would have all this dosh to be spent on the Anglo Saxon community.
Currently so far, Middle Class has not been attracted to the ilk of BNP, if that happened or happened on a large scale, I would indeed be worried.

I agree with you 100%. Having Muslims presented in good light in soaps etc, would do more for Muslims in the UK than anything else, it will change Muslim perspective in the Anglo Saxon mind. Saying that, i would still not watch soaps, i just happen to be Anti Soaps. :D.
