With the rise of Islamophobia, and the need of Active Muslim youth on campus, the Leeds Metropolitan University Islamic Society, has initiated a campaign with the help of the Student Union. As Muslims we are commanded to forbid the wrong and enjoin with the good. We are indeed the ambassadors of Islam so let's get active and act like it!!

[1] Establish Salah and implement Islam in your university life

First and foremost is the fulfilment of Huqooq Allaah; that is to offer your Salah regularly and encompass Islamic values in campus life. There is no reason not to pray or dress Islamically on campus. I recall in my first year, we had a deadline and the time for Maghrib Salah was fast approaching so I simply went around the corner of the Open Access Computer Facilities and prayed there.

[2] Carry out Dawah work

This could be by just speaking about Islam to your fellow Class Mates, giving out leaflets which you can pick up from the Islamic Society Prayer Rooms, but above all helping out on Islamic Awareness Week where the Islamic Society certainly needs an extra pair of hands!

[3] Join the ISOC

Without you the Islamic Society cannot exist, it exists solely because of your membership. It is your duty as a Muslim student on campus to join the Islamic Society, so that the Student Union are aware that the Muslim students are being catered for.

[4] Join the Student Union

Joining the Student Union can offer more than discounts at retail shops but it is your means to voicing your opinions in the affairs of the Student Union. If (Allaah forbid) a motion (law) is put forward to close the prayer rooms down, by means of this affiliation you can prevent this motion (law) from being passed.

[5] Join the Exec/Union Council Team of the SU

Muslims must take leading and prominent roles within Student Unions to ensure that they are not sidelined. Many Muslims have declined to participate in the Student Union as they perceive them to be anti-Muslim themselves, without looking beyond the surface to realize that anti Muslim sentiments originate from only a few individuals or organisations who clearly have an agenda of their own.

[6] Join FOSIS

FOSIS, the Federation of Student Islamic Societies, is the leading Muslim Student representative body. It was established in 1962 after a meeting held in Birmingham by students from the cities of Birmingham, Leeds, Liverpool, London, Wolverhampton and Dublin who realized the need to co-ordinate the work of Islamic societies across the UK and Ireland.

[7] Attend ISOC/SU/FOSIS events

Do try to attend the meetings in your spare time, meet with other Muslim students and keep up to date with current events.

[8] Attend the NUS Annual Conference as a delegate

The NUS is the governing body for universities across the country. At the NUS Annual conference, motions are put forward, debated, and then voted on. Motions which are passed through the NUS conference are then implemented in all those universities which are affiliated with the NUS. In essence, this is where you can voice your opinion, gain representation and influence policy.

[9] Help the Islamic Society

Without volunteers the Islamic Society will not be an effective tool for the Muslim Students. The Islamic Society needs writers, media monitors, prayer room cleaners, and event coordinators.

The hikmah (wisdom) of Malik El Shabbaz (Malcolm X) was: “Change the situation or be part of the cause”.

[10] Become a course rep

From college days to the first year of University I have endeavoured to represent my fellow class mates’ concerns and issues. From the food in the canteen, cold class rooms, study concerns, Eid days clashing with Exam days – the list is endless! This will indeed look good on your CV, and above all show that Muslims are really integrating in Leeds Metropolitan University for the greater good of all Students.

[11] Monitor Newspapers for Islamophobia

Whenever you pick up a newspaper always look out for islamophobic/Anti Semitic or any comments which are attacking any religion. If you find anything which is racist/inciting towards hatred please email us on info@leedsmetisoc.com

[12] Join the Student Newspapers

If you are a good writer, why not write articles for the student newspaper e.g. LiMe, Leeds Student, it will look great on your CV and above all you will help stop Islamophobia.
