Salaams, women wear niqab at several universities in England; the one I recently attended (Kingston) has several women who wear niqab. I've never heard of it being an issue.

asalamu alaikum sister and welcome to the forum :) mashallaah great to hear that u will be starting uni soon and also that u have 'donned' the niqaab! :) (may allaah reward ur efforts inshallaah, ameen).

with regards to niqaab issues, i had the same apprehensions although my situation was a bit different. im in my fourth year at uni and i started wearing niqaab at the end of the third year. i had no idea how my friends/peers/tutors would react but alhamdulillah everyone was great about it. naturally they asked questions and i answered them to the best of my knowledge.

the main thing is to be confident and comfortable with the way u dress, if u show determination and a resolve not to shirk from ur belief, people will respect u and the niqaab will not be an issue any longer. once people get to know u for who u are, the fact that ur covered with a veil becomes irrelevent. how i cope with a mixed environment is that first and foremost im there for the purpose of studying and once that objective has been fulfilled i simply leave. besides, remember ur doing this for allaah subhanahu so inshallaah He will make it easier for u.

furthermore be proud of urself! alhamdulillah ur a muslimah who isnt compromising her belief but instead obeying allaah subhanahu in observing pardah AND and broadening ur horizons, educating urself which will inshallaah lead u to contribute to society.

hope it all goes well inshallaah :)

i studied computing at queen marys. in the uni i went to, most of the pupils in my course were muslims - almost two thirds!. and nearly all the muslim girls wore hijab, some wore niqab (although most of the course was full of boys). infact QM has a large muslim community, there are loads of muslim girls with hijab.

everyone participated in presentations. they were quiet regular is some of my modules. but every uni differs. its not an issue really. you'll see people from all walks of life at uni. just go to the art department; you'll soon realise your not the only one dressed differently! ;)

although at QM (in east london) not wearing a hijab is considered dessing differently...and that applies for the guys too ;)

Jazakallah fo the welcome!
Basically jus read into wat the four imams (RA) had to say on the topic and although imam Abu- Hanifa (RA) reckons its alright to show the face... and I'm hanafi, i still reckon (and so do most hanafi ulama) that wearin niqab is wajib due to corrputness of time!
Hmm... basically wanted to wear it for my own protection, and hmm... agree totally with wat the ulama have to say on the topic...
alhamdulilah been wearin it for nearly a year now... and love it!

.u kno wot..
iif ur goin to uni so that in the future u can get a decent job...den is der realli any point in goin uni as a niqaabi...knowing that u might not get a job in the future coz of what u wear n all dat
i kno a niqaabi sis who studied ..and graduated n all dat ..but now she dnt get a job..mayb coz shes a niqaabi or mayb its luck

well if it gets in the way, it doesnt have to be worn. it's not fard after all. but so long as your qualified for the job, i cant see why you shouldnt get one.

dont give up too easily. :o

it is fair to say that wearing a niqab may strengthen your faith. but by removing your niqaab, you are not weakening your faith.

but by leaving it on you may be missing out on work/education.

work and education are also part of faith.

no one is telling you to leave it. as i told you in the chatroom: being a niqabi won't stop you from being a teacher so go for it and don't give up easily. just put your faith in Allah.

i have alot of respect for those sisers who wear the niqaab...dont let it get n ur way..if u want to study then study...there are alot of islamic schools opening nowadays and u could get a job there....help the muslim community i say

plus even if u dont have a job after ur degree does not mean to say u have wasted time..education is one thing that must never stop..u should carry on learning..

as mr flipflop said earlier, education is more important than work. you should go to university not only to find job but also and more important, to get education.

education is more important than work salams...
education dont put food on da table.....

no sister should give up in getting what she want or comprise herself in any way...
niqabi sisters probably wont get a job reading hte news on sky... but dont let that stop you trying... the same should apply for any sister in any position...

you girls need to get out there and spread some islamic cool from the inside out....

the worst thing any of us can do is to give up and reisgn our minds, bodies, efforts and potiential to the cooking and cleaning, and the waiting for the children to come home from school attitude so many of us have adopted...

and you know what.. if they dont let you in uni, or there are too many non-muslims for you to handle then study on the open university, and if you cant get a job in the field you want then start your own business...

just please dont give up or compromise yourself

no not realli..i find the niqaab way more important than the education..and the education i would get from the uni is not islamic education that i should hav alot of respect for!!

Assalamualykum...just my pennies worth

I believe both education and the way u choose to cover up should be equally important, and personally i believe that in no way does niqaab stop a woman from contributing to society with her talents...i know many muslim women who wear niqab and at the same time are making a difference in their society with their chosen profession...and yes some of these are teachers working in state schools...So to all out there step up and move in to the frontline with ure talents and help us pave our way to a healthier living society!!

The way i see it is .... No one should be treated differently jus because they were niqab... (and yes in the real world there is discrimination) but that doesn't mean we should jus give up.. There are many professions that have absolutely nothing to do with what the individual believes or practices, we jus have to go in with our heads held up high, inshallah Allah will make it easy for us.
I'll be making my du'as for all Muslims and especially to my fellow niqabi sisters:-)
o... and i'll be studyin criminal justice/ criminology at uni... No one at the uni let alone on my course wears niqab... but i'm not to hassled...i've got Allah to make things easy for me..inshallah
