Straw: Muslim Women Should Learn English

Jack Straw is one again picking on Muslims. He is now calling on Muslim women (only it seems) to learn English before they are given Citizenship.

While there is nothing with his comment in principle, not how he picks on Muslim women to make his point.

I believe this really vindicates the action of MPAC in the 2005 elections. Not only that my personal view is that Straw has realised that it is unlikely that he will get the votes he needs for the next election from the Muslims and is pandering to the far right for support.

Jack Straw says Muslim women should learn English before they are given a visa to stay in Britain.

The leader of the House of Commons sparked controversy last October when he called on Muslim women to remove their veils.

The Blackburn MP told a conference on integration, he knew a family who had moved to the country in 1954 and the woman could still not speak a word of English.

Mr Straw said: "One of the things we should be looking at is the subject of Asian women speaking English and whether we need to engage them and require them to speak English before they are given a settlement visa."
Mr Straw said he would be raising the issue with the Education Secretary Alan Johnson.

He also told the conference there was a huge cultural divide between Muslims and the rest of society. "One of the things we need to recognise is that there is a big cultural divide between Muslims and the rest of us, more than say with the Afro-Caribbean community."

Mr Straw's remarks came just days after Chancellor Gordon Brown called for immigrants to undertake community work before they were allowed to stay.
Trevor Phillips, chairman of the Commission for Equality and Human Rights, told the meeting Asian women who could not speak English were hampered in securing employment.

He said: "Really the problem is they don't speak English so they can't work. It's also a problem for the children.

They are very diligent in supervising homework but they can't help with the homework because they don't speak English."

This seems quite reasonable to me.

Indian women are more literate that Pakistani women that are more literate then Bengali women (generally - esp 1st generation)

Asian people should learn English it saves the country alot of money in translations - most of which are rubbish anyway....and it gives the individual power to take control over their own life. If I was "white" I would hate the idea that public money was going to translations bec people can tbe bothered to learn the language of the country they come in. I understand that sometimes for "cultural " reasons that isnt possible (ie asian men that dont want their partners to have control - or even men from asia that start doing 12 hour shifts straight away )so it must be a condition - that they learn English - I agree with him.....that they should learn eng if they dont know it already....

Its not just "white" people - everyone's taxes go to pay for these services. Its hard enough adjusting to new circumstances in a new, alien country, but not being able to speak the language - let alone read - it must make it extremely daunting, isolating and depressing.

Leaving the daily mail crap out of it for a moment I have to agree that if you decide to settle in another country you should do your best to learn the local language.
Even if you ignore all other factors it's good for the person concerned.

When on holiday in asia over the last couple of years I took the trouble to learn a few words so I could at least be polite. I see no reason why a person intending to live in a new country should not learn the language to the best of their ability.

I know how to say hello, thank you, goodbye and at least on good insult about your mother in a number of languages. :D

Indeed, the original headline was incorrect, this was not a religious thing, more a cultural thing. I agree that its scary that someone could have lived here for 50 years and not speak a word of English though! It must make life so much harder.
Now we have Asian radio and TV stations, but prior to that where would all their news and information come from?
