Salaams All

Eid is coming soon inshAllah and we see asian shopping areas busy with Muslim shoppers buying the latest saree, shalwar khameez and sherwani suits.

What happend to the clothes bought only a month and a half a go for eid? They have been discarded and are old. Hence everyone is buying the latest clothes to dress to impress friends and family. Who said those clothes are old? Fashion did, who and what is fashion and who dictates the latest trends? The manufacturers of clothes do because most clothes will last you years, which is no good for the people who make them. This is why they manage to convince shallow and foolish people to always follow the latest trends in order to be " IN "

Many of us Muslims have been blessed financially by Allah swt and we can afford to buy for both eids, but the point is why do we feel the need to? Why cant we wear what we wore only less than 2 months ago? Why don't we think of those who are less well off than us and instead give the money to them as charity or even give them our old clothes from only 2 months ago?

Just because we live in the west does not mean that we have to engage in consumarism and follow the latest fashions and trends albeit the Muslim/asian version. A saying i heard once which aptly describes what i am talking about is " I spend money to buy things i dont need in order to impress people who dont care about me".

Yes, alhamdulilah Islam allows us to buy nice clothes and look nice, but we also have a duty and responsibilty to those less well of then us and also to thank Allah swt for the rizk which we have been blesed with as a trust from Allah. Ultimately everything belongs to Allah and we are not the owners of anything at all.

Also I see some families who are struggling financially get themsleves into debt just so that they can dress and look nice for one day. Its quite funny actually because when we die and are put into our coffins we wont be wearing much more than a sheet and when Allah swt raises us on the last day we will all be naked and the men will be uncircumcised.

They [women] could just as well say to you just because we live in the west doesn't mean we should complain about everything.

It's Eid, if they have the means.. let them :)

Good thread Showkat.

I dont dress up for eid; i don't shop for clothes for eid at all. I haven't bought anything new for eid in 10 years (especially for eid) by my own estimates. The true spirit of eid is not the outward somewhat superficial traditions we see, it is the inner state of mind and heart that matters.

Publicist, I understand what you're saying, but surely one has to dress in their best attire for such a wonderful occasion such as Eid ?

As the Prophet (saw) did ?

Yes, but best attire does not mean new clothes.

True, Ish :)

Nevertheless, one has to make an effort to make sure the clothes one wears on Eid are more 'radiant' than the 'normal' clothes one wears on other occasions ;)

People should limit their buying to twice a year..

We dress up nice for people we meet, yet we dont dress up nice for the pleasure of Allah??

There is reward for wearing new clothes. SO save ya dosh for eid clothes rather than ya bro's wife's sister#s husband's friend's neighbour.

:D

I think Muslim, should look good for a very good reason. Your wife is sick of some guy looking great for a boss and not for her.

That goes same for you sisters. You doll up for boss and not for your husband.

Eid should go as a big bang! Joy! Its here for a reason. And we dont make good of it but our kids REMEMBER Xmas! Not Eid as much. The kids are watching, make it in too a big thing, and dont make something where one is broke, that we dont buy new clothes. Hey, if you got money help someone and with clothes; old ones then do what we do in our city....

Put the, together and give to charity. That then is solved.

Use Eid to sit with Kids and tell them stories of our history please instead of just visiting for food. Do that to other people kids to. Let them remember this years Eid Insha-Allah.

I want too look good; feel good; and smell good because I am an example what a Muslim is. My wife has rights over me too and I set example to look sharp in evening and day.

I dont need Eid to come to do that but Eid more, special, and it should radiant through our cities not with blawing horns from cars and bangarah. You want to do something; do something and educate Insha Allah about that.

I a, dreading it to see that. Really doesnt reflect Islam as a way of life of respect but animals shouted, screaming.
