The Palestinian Islamic resistance group, Hamas, said Saturday it would hit back at Israeli occupation forces in the Gaza Strip if attacked.
"We will not stand idle if and when the Israeli occupation army targets our fighters or civilians," said Mushir al Masri, a spokesman for the resistance group.
Masri reasserted Hamas's continued commitment to the de facto ceasefire reached between Palestinian resistance factions and the Palestinian Authority government a few months ago.
Earlier, Hamas leaders met in Gaza town with the PA interior Minister Nasr Yousuf and both sides reportedly agreed to maintain the calm.
The meeting comes in the aftermath of the recent escalation of tension in the Gaza Strip in which at least two Palestinian Islamic resistance activists were killed by the Israeli occupation army.
Hamas responded by firing missiles and mortar rounds on Jewish settlements in the region.
