Asra Nomani, the progressive Muslims' "Martin Luther" appeared on the US news show: Nightline, and had this to say:
"If not america, where else? America has a history of bringing human rights to the world, of bringing social justice to the world. It is obviously from america that muslim women should do this."
Obviously indeed --- it is afterall America that is on a civilizing mission!

it is haram to call oneself a progressive muslim. one follows islam and is a muslim.
there are no pre-fixes to being a muslim.

I am a moderate, progressive Muslim. Why is that Haram? Islam is flexible.

I think it depends on what you consider progressive.
If you think that Islam should be changed or some bits put in or left out in order to progress, then its not ok to be progressive.
But if by progressive you mean living in a Western society, but keeping Islam as it is, then its ok.
Depends on what you mean

well islam isnt exclusively for anyone. and it certainaly isn't an eastern religion. so living in the west doesnt make you progressive. you're still a muslim were ever you are.
you can change your country.
but changing the religion, now thats a different story.

Mere utterance in itself is haraam? Really?
Specific criteria have to be met for something to be labelled haraam! The authentic scholars are ultra-careful in such matters because the implications are so serious.

Islam is flexible within the limits of permissibility placed by Sharia.
When one goes beyond the limits of permissibility then the “taste” changes. Some Muslims do not consider issues such as homosexuality and riba (interest) etc. as haraam, some of these Muslims go under the label of “progressive Muslims” amongst many other names.

It must be stated that the methodology being used by the “progressive/ modern etc. Muslims” is also being used by many other individuals and groups without them assigning themselves such labels.
