View Full Version : English Speakers Please
Asalamu Alaikum,
I went to a Mawlid event this sunday and I was very dissappointed in the Masjid, they bought a dude from all the way from Pakistan to give a speech in English.
There were 7 speakers, 6 of them spoke in Urdu apart from one scholar who spoke these words "A Friend in Need is a Friend Indeed". Out of these 7 only one gave an English talk which only lasted 20 Minutes.
I know some masjid committee members come here, so hey can you atleast get a balanced scholars who speak English and Urdu?

Elders seem to be so reluctant to do this, i wantched a programme recently one of the Paksitani actually night and a brother was talking about mosques on it, he went ot his local mosques spoke to the imams told them his urdu was not great and he would appreciate Khutbas in English and they were so hostile they told him he should have learnt urdu then and bascially he was a coconut!! not very nice...
My local mosque khutba is given in urdu and its sad cos a few African sisters sit there getting bored i feel so bad for them...

Some people seem to think that Urdu or Bengali is Islam's sacred language and the convert or British-born Muslim should have to learn them.
Learning Arabic was hard enough, how many languages do I have to speak?!

khutbahs should be in English and repeated is a secondary language and khateebs should also refrain from screaming at the top of their lungs its really not nice....these are some of many reforms needed in our mosques however includign adequate access and services for women and a part in decision making....incidentally i was in Blackbrun i saw many lovely mosques and women are not allowed in any of them, when we wanted to pray we used the meditation room of the local library....didnt make me feel like a valued and respected member of the Ummah.

I agree with what you are saying but however giving talks in Urdu seems to be entrenched amongst the elders of communities. However in my local mosque there are now a few young imams who alhamdolillah are working hard for the youth and are getting eminent speakers who are giving lectures in English and they are offering English services.

LOL I agree, especially true with these Urdu speakers. Jinnah :dunce: should have chosen Arabic as the national language (of Pakistan). It potentially would have solved a lot of problems. Umm why were you sitting with the sisters!?

Maybe screaming in a shrill voice but its ok to yell
the prophet (SAW) would make his khutbah loudly and as if he was warding off an enemy army.
