ABOUT OLIUR RAHMAN

"You, the voters of Poplar and Canning Town, deserve to have a Member of Parliament who will fight on your behalf — an MP who will always put your welfare before his career.

"Tony Blair took this country to war in Iraq on a lie, with the complete support of New Labour MP Jim Fitzpatrick. The New Labour government so far has spent six billion pounds on this war. This money could have been spent on housing, pensioners and providing better facilities for our young people.

"Ever since I was elected as a councillor I have been working extremely hard to represent the people of Tower Hamlets and raise their concerns in the council chamber. I have a proven record in fighting for improved public services.

"I have campaigned vigorously against the fire service cuts imposed by the New Labour government.

"Jim Fitzpatrick, on the other hand, kept silent on this crucial issue which endangers everyone in Poplar and Canning Town —despite being a former firefighter.

"The people of Poplar and Canning Town have a very clear choice. You can either opt for Tony Blair’s Jim Fitzpatrick who has voted for the war, privatisation and tuition top-up fees.

"Or you can vote for me, Oliur Rahman. I will not betray you. I am fighting for better pensions, housing, youth facilities, increased investment in health and education and an end to privatisation.

"Vote for Respect for a better tomorrow."

CAMPAIGN STEPS UP IN LABOUR'S UNSAFE SEAT

We have had a very good weekend campaigning in Poplar and Canning Town with our candidate Oliur Rahman.

On Saturday we had 15 people canvassing in Bromley by Bow ward, while 11 people delivered the tabloid to homes in the south Newham part of the constituency. Meanwhile Oliur and other supporters travelled around the constituency on the Respect Campaign bus.

Sunday started with Oliur broadcasting on an Asian radio station, in debate with Lib Dems and Labour. Back in the constituency 18 people had a successful afternoon canvassing and Oliur went around the southern part of the constituency with the car speaker urging people to vote Respect.

The Respect shop has received many visitors over the weekend: school children who are having mock elections in their school came for stickers; a Somali man came to ask if he could bring his friends to the shop for a meeting where Oliur could talk to them about Respect and how they can get involved in the campaign. A man came to collect a bundle of window posters for his friends and family and also to invite Oliur to speak at his mosque. Today there was a wedding meal at the restaurant next door and lots of guests and other people passing by, called in to ask about Respect and to offer support.

In the Stratford & Newham Express this week, current MP Jim Fitzpatrick said "There's no such a thing as a safe seat in any candidate's mind. One's always wary of the fickleness of the public, especially at this election: the polls are all over the place and Iraq is a factor."

We have had a great response to the campaign. We know that we can get a good result in this constituency. But, to do that we need YOU. A copy of this week's activity sheet is attached. The shop at 813 Commercial Road, E14 will be open every weekday from 10am. Please call in or phone 07960 349290 whenever you are free to help in the campaign.
